Sappy Action Drama Triple Play

Weekend Openers
Your mission: Predict the opening weekend (Fri-Sun) totals for this week's releases. The deadline is Friday night at Midnight EST.

I must confess, I haven't heard of two of these movies until now.

Shia LaBeouf, fresh from being a sidekick to Mr. Indiana Jones, gets the lead role and joins up with his Disturbia director D.J. Caruso in the movie Eagle Eye. The plot consists of LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan are strangers thrown together by a mysterious phone call from a woman they never met. Threatening thier lives and their family, she pushes the two into a series of increasingly dangerous situations, using the technology of everyday life to track to control their evert move. As the situation escalates, these two ordinary people become the country's most wanted fugitives who must work together to discover what is really happening - and more importantly, why. Whoa. Looks like Julie Chen from that Big Brother show finally hit the big time! Gonna give this one bonus points for the inclusion of Michael Chiklis and Billy Bob Thornton into the movie - both BOB faves.

Spike Lee brings his latest project to the big screen with Miracle At St. Anna in a movie I have seen absolutely no commericials for - never a good sign. Set in 1944 Italy, the story revolves around four black American soldiers who get trapped in a Tuscan village during World War II. Not many of the lead actors are recognizable, however it should be noted that John Turturro, John Leguizamo and D.B. Sweeney will be appearing in some capacity.

Because you know we haven't had a good sappy love story in awhile, along comes Nights in Rodantha. And while I happen to like the skills of one Diane Lane, I really, truly could have done without Richard Gere - who at the age of 59 will still somehow manage to show off his butt to the camera. Gere plays a doctor who is travelling to see his estranged son encounters the unhappily married Lane while see is tending to her friends North Carolina Inn. Looks like the doc is making some house calls! Ugh.

I just wanted the world to know that I would have won this week - however, rules are rules and I really only have that one rule so I had better stick to it.

Ryan gets the first 5 pointer of the season and looks to extend his lead next week.

This Week Cancelled

Due to the wind storms from the remnants of Hurricane Ike, I have been without power for most of the weekand as a result without internet access. Also, I have been in a training class for most of this glorious week so I therefore will have to cancel Box Office Openers for this weekend.

I will have the results up from last week as soon as possible.

Don't ask how I was able to post this message. It involved three cases of motor oil, the cell phone of my wife, and a band saw.

Righteous Women Burn Family

Weekend Openers
We have just started the fall/winter season and the scores have all been reset. Now is a great time for more people to play. Remember, the more people that play, the less likely I will win (again).

An interesting start to the new season to be sure...

We finally get a DeNiro-Pacino film, even if it is probably 10 years too late. DeNiro and Pacino star as two veteran New York City detectives who work to identify the possible connection between a recent murder and a case they believe they solved years ago. Is there a serial killer on the loose, and did they possibly put the wrong man behind bars? It sounds good, and it does have John Leguizamo, Donnie Wahlberg and Brian Dennehy as co-stars...oh wait, never mind - so is 50 Cent. Ouch.

Two families from different walks of life learn to work together in this Tyler Perry gig. I'll be honest, I am not a big follower of Tyler Perry - even if he seems to be invading my television screen with his various film and television projects. And to give Perry some credit, I can say that I have never seen any of his work - therefore I really can't pass too much judgment here can I? Well besides the fact that he puts his name in front of everything he does - that seriously annoys me to know end. Kathy Bates is in this movie - that in itself rules.

The Cohen Brothers are back at it and once again they are teaming up with George Clooney in this crime comedy about a disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent that ends up in the hands of two unethical gym employees who attempt to sell it. The cast is packed with stars as Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand and John Malkovich join Clooney in what I suspect may be the "cool" film of the fall. Hell, I would almost pay to see it just to see Malkovich hit Pitt in the nose again. Almost.

When my wife saw that The Women was coming and the cast that was attached to it, she immediately declared box office success. Well, um....that probably is not gonna happen. The cast looks fantastic, as it seems to have plucked female leads from every aspect and age group - From Bette Midler and Annette Bening to Jada Pickett Smith and Debra Messing. The movie, however, is about a wealthy New Yorker leaving her cheating husband and bonding with other society women at a resort. Not exactly the kind of movie women will be able to drag their significant others to.

Bangkok Dangerous

Weekend Openers
Your mission: Predict the opening weekend (Fri-Sun) totals for this week's releases. The deadline is Friday night at Midnight EST.

If you like Nicolas Cage in shoot 'em movies, then odds are you will like this one. Of course, if Nicky has to actually ACT - the universe may come to an end. A hitman who just so happens to be in Bangkok to pull of a series of jobs falls for a local woman and bonds with his errand boy. Hopefully, Nicky's hair will be up for the challenge and stay on his head.

Also, we will be resetting the scores after this weekend and starting our fall season. So if anyone is interested in joining us - feel free.
